History of Robinson CI

Robinson CI opened on November 8, 1985. It stands on the site of a historic Shaker farm community that dates back to 1792. The land's quiet farming past sits oddly next to its modern use, but the Shaker name still marks Shaker Road and the route in. In January 1990, after the Inmate Objective Classification System took effect, the security level changed to medium. One building has its own story. Building 7 was turned over to the Judicial Department in 1996 for juvenile use. It came back in 1997 and reopened as a 71-person outside-clearance housing unit. The prison carries the name of Carl Robinson, who served as warden of Somers State Prison from 1972 to 1983 and was the first African American warden appointed in Connecticut.
